Terremark Worldwide to establish new data centre at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
Terremark Worldwide, the leading global supplier of IT infrastructure services, has selected Amsterdam Airport Schiphol as the location for its new data centre.
An international player, Terremark operates data centres worldwide in the United States, South America en Europe. At Schiphol, Terremark plans to partner with Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), a major hub for web-based communications with parties outside the Netherlands and for data exchange among Dutch Internet providers. The scale of Terremark's current operations in the Netherlands is modest, but the company has chosen Amsterdam Airport Schiphol as it plans to expand in Europe and the Netherlands in the years to come. The Schiphol data centre is expected to provide jobs for around 60 people.
"Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is a major European hub and a very strategic and strong business location, with an extensive network of destinations. We're delighted to be able to further expand our IT activities at this hub, close to our customers in the Netherlands and other European countries," says Manuel D. Medina, CEO of Terremark Worldwide Inc.
Terremark at Schiphol-North
Terremark plans to move into an office building at Schiphol-North by the end of this year. Over the coming months the building will be renovated according to sustainable practices and fitted out as a data centre. The parties have launched a feasibility study to find out whether the residual heat produced by the data centre could be used as a sustainable source of energy for Schiphol's airport processes.
Terremark has also entered into an agreement with Schiphol Real Estate for realising a data centre campus of approx. 25,000 m2 on an adjacent site.
Schiphol welcomes Terremark's decisions. "Terremark's team in the Netherlands has a long-standing reputation for providing superior products and services to some of Europe's most important companies," said Maarten de Groof, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Schiphol Group. "Terremark now decides to extend its presence in Europe and the Netherlands and provide its suite of services from this new, state- state-of-the-art facility within Amsterdam Airport Schiphol area that houses more than 500 international oriented companies."
