Perishables

Perishables trade in the Netherlands - an introduction
The Netherlands is an ideal hub for perishables. It is both a major producer and international trader of a wide range of fresh products, being one of the three largest exporters of agricultural products in the world.

Amsterdam Airport Area - European Perishables Hub
Large volumes of perishables are transported via and through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Eighty per cent of the perishable air cargo originates from trade flows of flowers, fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. Ornamental plants are the largest group in terms of volume. Sixty per cent of all flowers traded across the world are imported and/or exported through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
FloraHolland Flower Auction, the centre of the international flower trade, is only a few minutes' drive to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Logistics hub
Amsterdam Airport Area has developed into an international multimodal hub with a high concentration of logistics companies specialized in perishables. These firms offer a broad range of services: warehousing, temperature-controlled and cold storage, vacuum cooling, pick & pack and transportation, tax handling, (phyto-)inspection, relabelling and repair, and value-added logistics.

Future developments
Due to the ever-increasing growth of the perishable as well as other sectors, new plans are being developed to improve transport flows further in the Amsterdam Airport Area. A multimodal hub, dedicated to logistics, will be developed directly south of the airport in the next few years (ACT, which includes Schiphol Logistics Park and A4 Zone West). The aim of these new plans is to create a leading competitive, high-quality business area close to the airport, standing out in terms of accessibility, image and the facilities it provides.
